Why Learn Scuba Diving in Koh Tao?
Koh Tao has built a reputation as one of the best places in the world to learn scuba diving. Every year thousands of new divers choose the island because of its ideal learning conditions and affordable courses.
The waters around Koh Tao are generally calm and warm throughout the year, making it comfortable for beginners. Visibility is often excellent, allowing new divers to easily see marine life and coral reefs during their training dives. The island also offers a wide variety of dive sites suitable for training, from shallow coral gardens to slightly deeper reefs.
Learning to dive in Koh Tao also means you’ll have the chance to see amazing marine life while completing your training. During the course it’s common to encounter tropical fish, butterflyfish, groupers, stingrays, and sometimes even turtles. The vibrant reefs around the island make every training dive exciting and memorable.
Another reason many people choose Koh Tao is the relaxed atmosphere. The island has a friendly diving community and a slower pace of life, which makes it a perfect environment for learning a new skill like scuba diving.
What Makes Scubadoo Different
At Scubadoo, we focus on quality training and small groups. We believe learning scuba diving should be a fun and stress-free experience, not a rushed one. Our instructors take the time to guide each student step by step so you feel comfortable in the water before moving on to the next skill.
One of the biggest differences with our Open Water course in Koh Tao is that we include six training dives. Most dive schools include only four dives, which is the minimum required to complete the certification. By adding two extra dives, you get more practice, more time underwater, and a better overall experience.
Small groups are another important part of our philosophy. With fewer students per instructor, you receive more personal attention and support throughout the course. This helps beginners feel more relaxed and confident during their first dives.
We also provide high-quality diving equipment and a comfortable boat environment for all our trips. Everything is included in the course so you can focus on enjoying the experience and learning new skills.
What You Will Learn During the Course
The SSI Open Water Diver course is divided into three main parts: theory, confined water training, and open water dives.
The theory portion of the course introduces you to the fundamentals of scuba diving. You will learn how diving equipment works, how to plan safe dives, how pressure affects the body underwater, and how to communicate with your dive buddy. SSI provides digital learning materials that you can complete online at your own pace before or during the course.
After the theory sessions, you will practice essential diving skills in shallow water. This training allows you to become comfortable breathing underwater and using the equipment. Skills include clearing water from your mask, recovering your regulator, controlling your buoyancy, and communicating underwater.
Once you feel confident with the basic skills, you will move on to the open water dives around Koh Tao. During these dives you will practice the skills you learned while also exploring the reef and observing marine life. These training dives are where most students truly fall in love with scuba diving.
Dive Sites You May Visit
During your Open Water course in Koh Tao, the dives usually take place at some of the island’s most beginner-friendly dive sites. Locations are selected based on weather and sea conditions to ensure the safest and most enjoyable experience.
Popular training sites include Twins, Japanese Gardens, and White rock, all known for their calm waters and beautiful coral formations. These sites offer gentle slopes and sandy areas that are ideal for practicing diving skills. On the last day we try to go somewhere nice like Chumphon Pinnacle or Southwest Pinnacle
While training, you will also have plenty of opportunities to see marine life. Schools of tropical fish, colorful corals, and occasional rays or turtles are common sights around these dive sites. Many students are surprised by how much marine life they encounter during their very first dives.
Course Schedule
The SSI Open Water course in Koh Tao typically takes three days to complete.
On the first day, you will begin with theory sessions and skill practice in shallow water. This is where you learn how to use the equipment and get comfortable breathing underwater.
The second and third days are dedicated to open water diving from the boat. You will complete a series of training dives while gradually building confidence and improving your buoyancy and underwater awareness.
Because our course includes six dives instead of four, you have extra time to practice and enjoy the underwater environment without feeling rushed.
After You Become a Certified Diver
Once you complete the course, you will be certified as an SSI Open Water Diver. This certification allows you to dive anywhere in the world up to 18 meters deep with a buddy.
Many divers choose to continue their training with the Advanced Adventurer course, which allows you to explore deeper dive sites and try different types of diving such as deep diving or navigation. Others simply enjoy fun diving around Koh Tao to gain more experience and explore new dive sites.
The Open Water certification is only the beginning of your diving journey. It opens the door to a lifetime of underwater adventures and exploration.
