The Ultimate Guide to Koh Tao Dive Sites (2026)

Wondering where to dive in Koh Tao? Whether you're taking your first breaths underwater or you're an experienced diver chasing deep pinnacles, Koh Tao offers an incredible variety of dive sites. From vibrant coral gardens to dramatic granite boulders and even a shipwreck, there's something for every level of diver.

At Scubadoo, we visit many of these sites throughout the year depending on weather, sea conditions, and diver experience. Here's our local guide to the island's most popular dive sites.

1. Sail Rock – The Gulf of Thailand's Iconic Dive

If there's one dive that belongs on every diver's bucket list in the Gulf of Thailand, it's Sail Rock.

Located between Koh Tao and Koh Phangan, Sail Rock rises from deep water to just below the surface. It's famous for its towering pinnacle, huge schools of fish, and the legendary "chimney" swim-through.

Depth: 8–40+ metres
Level: Advanced Adventurer or Advanced Open Water recommended
Highlights:

  • Massive schools of trevally and barracuda

  • Batfish

  • Queenfish

  • Giant groupers

  • Seasonal whale shark sightings

  • The famous chimney swim-through

If you're already certified, Sail Rock is a dive you won't forget.

2. Chumphon Pinnacle – Koh Tao's Signature Dive Site

Just a short boat ride from Koh Tao, Chumphon Pinnacle is considered one of the island's best dive sites.

A granite pinnacle covered in colourful anemones attracts huge numbers of reef fish and larger pelagic species.

Depth: 14–35 metres
Level: Advanced recommended

Keep an eye out for:

  • Barracuda

  • Giant groupers

  • Batfish

  • Trevally

  • Fusiliers

  • Whale sharks during the right season

This site is ideal for photographers and experienced divers looking for action.

3. Southwest Pinnacle – Colourful and Full of Life

Southwest Pinnacle consists of several granite pinnacles rising from the sandy seabed.

Soft corals, sea whips, and colourful reef fish make this one of the most photogenic dives around Koh Tao.

Depth: 5–30 metres
Level: Open Water (shallow areas) to Advanced

Expect to see:

  • Angelfish

  • Butterflyfish

  • Triggerfish

  • Barracuda

  • Giant groupers

  • Blue-spotted stingrays

4. White Rock – A Favourite for Every Diver

White Rock is one of Koh Tao's most popular dive sites—and for good reason.

Its mix of sandy patches, coral bommies, and healthy reef makes it suitable for both training dives and fun dives.

Depth: 6–20 metres
Level: Beginner friendly

Marine life includes:

  • Sea turtles

  • Pufferfish

  • Butterflyfish

  • Moray eels

  • Blue-spotted stingrays

  • Bannerfish

Night dives here are especially popular thanks to the different marine life that emerges after sunset.

5. Twins – Perfect for New Divers

If you're learning to dive, there's a good chance you'll visit Twins.

Calm conditions, gentle depths, and plenty of marine life make it one of the best beginner dive sites on the island.

Depth: 5–18 metres
Level: Beginner

You'll often find:

  • Butterflyfish

  • Pipefish

  • Clownfish

  • Triggerfish

  • Groupers

  • Colourful nudibranchs

It's also a fantastic site for underwater photography.

6. Japanese Gardens – Calm, Colourful and Beautiful

Located just off Koh Nang Yuan, Japanese Gardens is known for its shallow reefs and stunning hard corals.

It's one of the island's easiest dive sites and is ideal for beginners or anyone wanting a relaxed dive.

Depth: 2–18 metres
Level: Beginner

Expect healthy coral formations and plenty of tropical reef fish in crystal-clear water.

7. Shark Island – Dramatic Underwater Landscapes

Despite its name, Shark Island isn't known for sharks every day. Instead, it's famous for impressive granite formations, swim-throughs, and strong biodiversity.

Depth: 5–24 metres
Level: Intermediate

You may spot:

  • Blue-spotted stingrays

  • Groupers

  • Trevallies

  • Moray eels

  • Schools of snapper

Sea conditions can change quickly here, making it better suited to divers with some experience.

8. Green Rock – Swim-Through Paradise

Green Rock is one of the most unique dive sites around Koh Tao.

Large granite boulders create exciting swim-throughs, tunnels, and narrow passages.

Depth: 8–28 metres
Level: Open Water with experience or Advanced

Highlights include:

  • Giant moray eels

  • Blue-spotted stingrays

  • Triggerfish

  • Batfish

  • Interesting rock formations

9. Hin Wong Pinnacle – A Hidden Gem

Less crowded than some of Koh Tao's famous sites, Hin Wong Pinnacle rewards divers with excellent visibility and impressive schools of fish.

Depth: 12–30 metres
Level: Intermediate to Advanced

This site is well known for:

  • Fusiliers

  • Barracuda

  • Trevally

  • Colourful reef fish

  • Excellent visibility on good days

10. HTMS Sattakut – Koh Tao's Wreck Dive

For divers interested in wrecks, the HTMS Sattakut offers a completely different experience.

This former naval vessel was intentionally sunk to create an artificial reef and has become home to countless marine species.

Depth: 18–30 metres
Level: Advanced recommended

Around the wreck you'll often find:

  • Groupers

  • Batfish

  • Lionfish

  • Scorpionfish

  • Schools of snapper

It's an excellent introduction to wreck diving.

11. Lighthouse Bay – A Quiet Escape

Looking for something a little different?

Lighthouse Bay on Koh Tao's east coast is less frequently visited than the island's famous west coast sites, making it a peaceful option when conditions are right.

Large boulders, healthy coral, and fewer boats create a more secluded diving experience.

Because the east coast is weather-dependent, Lighthouse Bay is usually dived during the calmer months.

Which Dive Site Is Best for Beginners?

If you're learning to dive, our favourite beginner-friendly sites are:

  • Twins

  • White Rock

  • Japanese Gardens

These sites offer gentle depths, calm conditions, and plenty of marine life without feeling overwhelming.

Which Dive Site Has the Best Chance of Seeing Whale Sharks?

Whale sharks are wild animals, so sightings can never be guaranteed.

However, they are most commonly reported at:

  • Sail Rock

  • Chumphon Pinnacle

  • Southwest Pinnacle

Seeing one is a matter of luck—but every dive has the potential to surprise you.
